Sugar Gliders, The Perfect Pocket Pet

If you have been thinking about getting a great small pet that is friendly, fun and entertaining then you should consider a sugar glider! Here is some great information about these cute little critters.

Sugar Gliders are marsupials which means that the babies are born extremely immature and then grow in a pouch on the mothers abdomen until they are mature enough to survive outside her body on their own.

The adult sugar gliders size is usually around 5-6 inches long with a weight of 4-6 ounces.

Between the wrist and the ankle, sugar gliders have a fur covered membrane called a patapium. To see an example of a sugar glider in flight visit http://www.LittlePawsPetClub.blogspot.com. By spreading out their hands and feet the sugar gliders patapium acts like a parachute allowing the sugar glider to float through the air.

Sugar gliders have large apposable toes on their hind feet which allows them to grip branches. This assists the sugar glider while gliding from limb to limb and while climbing. Sugar gliders second and third toes form a grooming comb which they can use to groom their fur.

Sugar gliders are extremely social and enjoy companionship. Because of this fact sugar gliders usually bond well with their owners. If you do not have a lot of time to spend with your sugar glider it is a good idea to keep more than one.

If you plan on keeping more than one sugar glider it is advisable to raise them together from a young age as it can be difficult introducing unaquainted adults.

Be sure to purchase an appropriate cage for your sugar glider. It is best to get the largest cage that you can afford to give your sugar gliders plenty of room.

Before purchasing a sugar glider as a pet, be sure to research their nutritional needs. Sugar gliders have some special dietary calcium requirements that are important to follow to keep your sugar glider in optimum health.

Sugar gliders are nocturnal animals, so if you plan on owning a sugar glider be prepared to have a pet that is most active during the night. Sugar gliders make a chainsaw like sound, so you may want to place their cage in an area where their talking does not disturb you while you sleep.

In spite of the fact that sugar gliders are nocturnal, they are usually happy to spend time with their owners during the day by sleeping in a pocket or pouch. Many sugar glider owners find this trait particularly charming and take their little sugar glider pocket pets with them everywhere they go.

Animals - Sugar Gliders - Great "Pocket Pets"

The sugar glider, or Petaurus Breviceps, is a very small tree dwelling (arboreal) marsupial. Other marsupials include kangaroos and possums. Sugar gliders are native to Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia and Tasmania. Most marsupials carry their young in a pouch where they grow and develop and sugar gliders are no exception. Sugar gliders got this unique name because they love sweet foods and also because they can glide over 165 feet! They glide by launching themselves off trees and opening their gliding membrane, known as the patagium. This membrane stretches from their wrists to their ankles.

If you are thinking of purchasing one of these "pocket pets" there are a few things you should consider. Be aware that sugar gliders can live from ten to fifteen years in captivity so be sure that you will be able to care for your pet that long. Also, gliders are very social animals so if you can, you should get two. If you only get one, you will need to spend at least two hours a day with it.

Sugar gliders are nocturnal, which means they are only active at night. If you can't spend time with them at night then this may not be the pet for you. During the day they just want to sleep. You will have to feed and play with them when they wake up.

Sugar gliders cannot be kept in small cages, they are very active and love to jump and glide. They will need a cage at least 18" X 18" X 36". The taller the cage is the better, because they love to climb. The wire of the cage should not be galvanized wire because it can cause urinary tract infections in the gliders. A great type of wire to use is powder coated wire. The bar spacing of the wire should not be larger than half an inch. When you get the cage, choose a location that isn't too noisy during the day so that they can sleep. Also, put the cage in a room that has windows so that they know what time of the day it is. However, do not put the cage in direct sunlight.

Inside the cage you will need to put a place for them to sleep. Fleece pouches are highly recommended. Fleece is the safest material to use for gliders. Sugar gliders have been known to get their nails caught in other materials. You should also get a variety of toys for the cage. Some suggestions for toys are ladders, bells, swings, ropes and perches. Just make sure none of the toys have small pieces that could be swallowed.

Sugar gliders also have very specialized diets so make sure you will have the time to prepare their food every day. They are not a pet that can be left alone for days; they must have constant care. If you go on vacation you will either need to bring them with you or find a dependable person to care for them while you are gone. There are many proven diets for sugar gliders and you should do research on each diet and decide which one is best for you. Some examples of great diets are BML, Darcy's diet, the Sugar Glider Exotic Diet and the Suncoast diet.

Also, you will need to find a vet in your area that treats sugar gliders. Not all vets will treat sugar gliders because they are considered an exotic pet. Sugar gliders do not require any shots, but you should bring them to the vet for yearly checkups. Because they are considered to be exotic, some states will not even allow them. Make sure that they are legal in your area. Some states in which they are illegal are Hawaii, Alaska, California, Georgia and Massachusetts.

One of the things people love most about sugar gliders is the strong bond they form with their owners. If you spend time with them every day, they will become very bonded to you and will not want to leave you. In order to help your pet bond with you, you can carry your glider in a bonding pouch or your pocket during the day while it sleeps. Just make sure your glider can't get out. Sugar gliders are very scent oriented and will need to get used to your scent. Carrying your sugar glider around during the day will help it get used to your scent. You can periodically offer your pet treats so that it associates you with good things. At night, you can let your sugar glider out into a room that is closed off from the rest of the house. Make sure that they cannot get out of this room and that the room doesn't contain anything that could hurt your glider. Check the room for any holes, cover electrical sockets, remove any harmful chemicals and make sure nothing in the room can hurt them. If you don't have a safe room to let them out into, you can purchase a camping tent and play with them in there. Eventually, your glider will bond with you; it just needs to learn to trust you.

Sugar gliders make wonderful pets if you have the time to care for them. If you spend lots of time with them they will form a strong bond with you different than any other animal. Sugar gliders are very playful, active and inquisitive. They are a true joy to watch. Just be sure you have the time and patience for them.

Soar Like a Bird With RC Gliders and Sailplanes

Flying outdoors with your own little glider is both fun and relaxing. RC gliders and sailplanes offer a quieter and cheaper flying experience as opposed to electric or gas powered RC planes.

The first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, once said this about gliders. "Gliders, sail planes, they're wonderful flying machines. It's the closet you can come to being a bird."

Neil was not wrong, RC gliders are just like there full size counterparts and really gives everyone the chance to soar like a bird. So you want to soar? Then read on.

First you need to know there are glider and sailplanes, which are basically both the same thing, it is just that gliders can sometimes have a small electric motor for steering and sailplanes don't. Out of the two, I think RC gliders are better because you can still have some control but also have an enjoying and relaxing flight.

Next you should know some of the downsides to flying an RC glider or sailplane. One thing is that they require more room to make a turn and they also move much slower. Moving slow is actually an advantage for beginners because it allows them more reaction time when flying, but if you have more experience then it isn't so much fun.

When looking for a glider, there are two options that you have; a powered glider or a non-powered one. Powered gliders are exactly that, they have electric motors that can be used for steering or actually propelling, but that kind of takes away the whole purpose of a glider so I wouldn't recommend that.

Non-powered gliders ride on thermal air currents, which allow the plane to fly along slowly. Powered gliders use a small electric motor with a folding propeller, and when the glider is to your desired height, you can just turn the motor off and it will become a true glider. Then if your glider starts to drop, you can just turn the motor back on and you can climb again.

Lastly we need to discuss launching your RC glider or sailplane. There are actually several ways to get your glider into the air, and all work just as good as the other I would say. The first way is hand launching the plane into the air. When doing this, always make sure you keep your hand at the exact center of gravity on the glider or sailplane, and launch it into the wind. That's it, it is that simple!

Another way to launch your glider is called discus launching, which takes the strain of hand launching out of the picture. Learn more about discus lunching if you think that is something you want to do.

That is some useful information on RC gliders and sailplanes that I have learned from my own experience. Just remember, when buying any glider or sailplane, always check for required accessories and what is not included. A Ready to Fly (RTF) glider should come with everything needed to start flying, but other kits might require some extra spending.

Porch Gliders - The Perfect Way To Unwind

There is no better way to unwind after a hard day's work then by relaxing on a porch glider. Swaying back and forth creating a soft cooling breeze while you sip your icy lemonade; your stress just melts away. Add one to your patio decor and it may become your favorite seat in or out of the house.

The great thing about porch gliders is their versatility. You can use one on its own or as part of a seating arrangement and add some movement to your motif. Make it an intimate romantic retreat or part of the party. Place one on your patio, in the yard or alongside the pool and soak up the sun while you glide back and forth. Try putting one under a canopy of trees to cool off in the shade or in the garden for a place to sit and admire your hard work.

Expertly crafted from teak, redwood, cedar, cypress, or alder gliders vary from the classic Adirondack style to more contemporary looks and they are easy to maintain. Leave them in their natural state and watch them weather to a silver grey or treat them to maintain their original warm coloring. Choose a plastic glider and there is no maintenance. Plus you can pick a color that suits your décor. It's so easy to find one that fits your personal style. Turn the comfort level up a notch with a plush cushion for your glider. Available in bright colors and vibrant patterns you'll add a punch of personality and a touch of luxury.

All you need is some sun and you're set to enjoy the summer. That is unless you want to share your gliding comfort. Porch gliders are available in different sizes. Get one just for you or made for more. Generally a two foot glider will seat one, a four foot one will seat one person comfortably or two people well enough if they don't mind being cozy. But a five foot glider or larger is the way to go for two or more friends without invading personal space.

Choosing the perfect size, style and wood for your porch glider will be a fun-filled adventure and the easiest way to do it is by shopping online. But the fun doesn't stop once you find your perfect porch glider because then you get to put it on your patio or in your yard and enjoy the soft relaxing breeze for many summers.

Savor your cold drink and the gentle breeze as you take in the sights, sounds and smells of your yard and garden. You have truly made it a place that you long to be in. Whether you want to tell stories to your grandchildren by firefly light or just enjoy the glory of a sunset; porch gliders make a great addition to your patio or backyard décor.

Practice Prevention on Patio Swings and Gliders

Without the proper attention, all furniture, whether for use outdoors or indoors, will begin to deteriorate in quality and condition. Something with moving parts, like patio swings and gliders, requires an even higher level of maintenance to keep them looking new. But in the long haul, the time spent will not only save you time in the future, it will also save you money. By preventing problems from the start, you will have fewer problems later on.

Metal

The biggest problem with metal outdoor furniture, not just patio swings and gliders, is rust. Most swings are made from lighter metals like aluminum (otherwise they would be too heavy to swing) that don't rust as easily as some other metals, but it's still a concern. For starters, keep all metal surfaces as dry as possible at all times. Use a towel to dry off swings after it rains or whenever they get wet so that moisture does not stay on the surface for too long. You might even want to cover your swing with a tarp overnight to protect against dew and during rainstorms.

For any spots you notice that begun to oxidize, use sandpaper or a power sander to remove all signs of rust so that it does not spread. You will also need to take into account the metal hardware, which comes not just with metal swings, but also wood and sometimes resin models. Any pieces and parts that are starting to rust or break down need to be replaced immediately prevent damage to the overall structure.

The last thing to remember for metal swings and other furniture with moving parts is to oil joints and hinges so that they don't stick or squeak.

Wood

The classic and most common choice for patio swings and gliders is woods like cedar, teak and pine. To maintain, remember to take into consideration all of the different wooden pieces, including but not limited to the bench itself. This also means the wooden base underneath the glider seat, the decking, the canopy, the wooden connector beams, and/or an overhead beam and framework. Each of these pieces requires the same kind of maintenance. Replace any pieces of wood which have begun to fall apart. You can control the spread of small cracks and splits in the wood by using fine grained sandpaper to get around and underneath the cracked area.

One of the main things you can do to protect all of your wood furniture from rain, snow and UV rays, is to cover pieces with a sealant of some sort. This will also help to better keep the wood's coloration. Use oil, varnish, sealant, paint or combination thereof, like an oil-based varnish a few times per year. Before doing this, make sure that all wood surfaces are clean, dry, smooth and do not have old varnish still on it. This will make the sealant better adhere and look more even. Leftover varnish can easily be sanded off. Once you do this, wipe all sand dust with a rag and use a mild cleaner like Murphy's to wash the wood.

When you think of wooden swings and gliders one often forgets the metal chains which often connect the swing and allow it to move. There are two problems associated with chains: rust and wobble. Chains are often cheap and so are not covered with rust-proof coatings as is the majority of metal hardware. You will need to replace any rusty chains, making sure to buy the same length of chain for each side. Wobble, or tilt of the swing is usually a result of loose bolts and joints. Keeping all parts tight should correct this problem.

Lastly, wooden patio swings and gliders will also need some amount of oiling, much like metal swings. Moving parts need to be coated with something like WD-40 (which also can more easily get into hard to reach spots). These parts include the swing connectors, joints, any hinges, and the glider track that connects the base and bench parts.

BR 6 - Review Of Fabulous Paper Gliders By Norman Schmidt

Date Reviewed: 1 May 2008

Book Name: Fabulous Paper Gliders

Author: Norman Schmidt

ISBN #: 1-895569-23-0

Year of original book/Year of my copy - 1998/1998

Pages - 96

Cover Price - $12.95

Named Planes - The Paperwing, Glasflugel Libelle 201, Lilienthal 1895 Glider, Primary Glider, Orlik, Grunua Baby, Waco CG-4, Colditz Cock, Schweizer SGS 1-26, Schleicher Ka-6, Lark S.I. 28B2, Salto H 101, Solitare Canard, Genesis, PW-5 Smyk, Schemp-Hirth Nimbus 4.

Level of difficulty - (1-10) 8

Comments:

I enjoy Norman's books. He always has planes with great flying capabilities, with heavily researched and informative text. This book is no different, and stands apart from many paper airplane books in that it focuses on paper planes inspired from real gliders.

All paper planes are essentially gliders, so these seem to imitate their real cousins. Watching the Waco plane fly makes those old WW2 black and white newsreels spring to life.

This book contains plans for 16 planes. All will require cutting with scissors, a sharp hobby knife, 65lb card stock or 5x8 index cards, and some form of glue. A glue stick will work just fine. The idea is that you trace or photocopy the designs onto regular paper, then transfer them to card stock or 5x8 index cards to cut out. DON'T CUT OUT THE DESIGNS FROM THE BOOK! It isn't necessary. While his method works, it is cumbersome and involves a lot of steps. What I did was scan each plan, and put them into a word document. That way, whenever I need to make one of his planes, I print out the plane onto 65lb cardstock, and cut it out. No need to trace or transfer, and I can make unlimited copies. Two 5x8 plans fit on one 8x11 sheet. A bonus is that I expanded the designs, so that one plan fits onto an 8x11 sheet, and you can see the result in the pictures of the Lilienthal Glider and the Waco Glider. It makes a nice, larger plane, and with a little reinforcing of key areas, they fly AWESOME!

So is there anything I don't like about the book? Not much. Apart from having to scan the planes (tedious, but a one time affair), there is nothing to not like about it. A lot of good technical data, some personal stories and good history of the planes, it makes for a pleasant read. Combined with great flying designs, I am pleased to award this book a score of 10 out of 10. I would recommend this book to adults, and older children (mainly because of the knife work involved). However, the planes are a joy for children of all ages to fly, and I heartily recommend parents making them with their young children to enjoy.

Do You Rock-A-Bye Baby in Nursery Rockers Or Nursery Gliders?

Mothers have been purchasing nursery rockers for many generations. They offer the perfect motion to calm a screaming baby or put a tired baby right to sleep. While nursery rockers remain a staple for many new parents and grandparents, others are opting for more modern nursery gliders instead.

Nursery Rockers

Rocking chairs are no longer used just for rocking a newborn to sleep or calming down a cranky toddler. Some parents will rock their children until they are seven years old or sometimes older. As long as the parent and child can both fit comfortably in the chair, it will remain a great way to spend time together and bond. Many families even have more than one rocking chair in their home.

Solid wood rockers can be found in a wide variety of styles as well as colors. Some are stained different colors and show the natural wood grain while others are painted. Some rocking chairs are even suitable for adding paint and other embellishments in order to create a truly original look in the nursery. As long as all materials are completely safe and nontoxic, creativity is encouraged!

There are a few things that should be kept in mind when selecting a rocker for the nursery:

If you want to use your rocker for more than a few minutes at a time, you will need to add a soft cushion.
Some rocking chairs will feel differently than others so it's a good idea to test it out before purchasing.
Rockers for the nursery must be extremely quiet so test it out and make sure it does not squeal, hiss, or click on the floor.
Some nursery rockers are more durable than others, but you can often judge this by seeing the condition of rockers that have been used as display models in stores for awhile.

Nursery Gliders

So, what exactly is a glider and how is it different from a rocking chair? Here are some things that will make it easier to understand:

When you rock in a rocking chair you are moving forward then down a bit and back. A glider just moves in a straight diagonal so you don't have that arched dip down toward the floor as you go forward or backward.
Nursery gliders will have a lot of cushioning and fabric built on which makes it more like sturdy furniture.
You can find many gliders that come with a matching footstool that also glides, but most rocking chairs are stand alone items.
You can decorate and repaint most rocking chairs to customize them, but you can't do that with gliders.

You definitely need a rocker or glider in your home. To determine which one you need, try them out and see which motion feels more comfortable for you.

Get out and try a variety of gliders and rockers in stores. Just remember that gliders are solid furniture which can be added into other rooms of the home when your children are older.

Safety is important no matter which you choose. Make sure crawling babies don't get under the legs of a rocker, and gliders should have no exposed moving parts where fingers can be pinched.

Outdoor Gliders And Swing Sets In Kit

If you would like to get a brand new wooden swing set you should consider getting a kit to build your own. You need not be a very experienced handyman to do it yourself successfully. The kits that you can now purchase from most swing set retailers come in many variations and with everything you need to complete the project.

These sets are designed with people like you in mind. They offer you flexibility and back up you may need, except for the actual timber. You don't need to fret about that though as the pack will include a detailed list of all the pieces you need, with their exact sizes, so you can order them easily from your local timber merchant.

The instructions are very easy to follow and understand so even if you have never built anything before you can't really go wrong if you follow the directions step by step. They are put together in such a way that you will always know where you're at and what the next step is, without confusion.

The key thing to look out for when you decide on the swing set kit you are buying is whether it comes complete with all the specialist hardware necessary to complete the project successfully, and steer well clear of any kit that doesn't come with these pieces. While timber is easy to come by wherever you live finding specialist swing hardware may be far trickier as your local stores may not be able to order them up for you, and locating suppliers on your own could prove very time consuming and frustrating, not to mention costly.

Wooden swing set building kits are a great option to get yourself a brand new swing set that you can be proud of for years to come. The only thing be very mindful of is the kind of timber you purchase for the job. It is an absolute must that the wood you pick is treated properly to resist outdoor conditions. This means that you may need to treat it before you start building the set if it is not supplied already weather resistant: do not skip this step unless you want to run the risk of your beautiful new set getting ruined by the weather.
