Apartment Composting 101: Vermicompost with Barb Finnin

UPDATE: We have modified this original design to a shallower, more airy worm bin. Check out our new design here, ryanishungry.com Cheers! Good Luck! ————————————-- Barb Finnin is part of the amazing Freshtopia team. She's a certified master composter- her specialty is Vermicomposting with worms. We were super excited to learn that we could compost in our city apartment with a homemade worm bin even though we don't have a yard. Throwing food scraps away in the garbage is not something either of us enjoys, so having a green alternative has been more than satisfying for our sustainability goals. After 4 weeks, our worms are happy and thriving. Find out more about Vermicomposting and other forms of composting on Wikipedia. Visit Barb at Freshtopia.net. Runtime- 9:47

Beautiful Deck and Porch Railing Plans-Hints and Ideas

Ideas abound for creating the perfect deck design for your needs. Homeowners find an outside deck is an oasis of peace and
calm. They are perfect if you want to lounge around by yourself, or if you want to entertain a group of friends in the
evening. Because of all of the use you will get out of it, you want to make sure you choose the right kind of railing for your deck. The railing is the most important feature of the deck, since it is the most visible. The deck railing is viewable
from outside the house, inside the house and, of course, from the deck itself. Make sure you have your deck railing plan
already figured out before you start to build your deck, because you will most likely have to tie the railings to the posts
of the deck. Even though you do not have to match the post material to the railing material, you do not want to have them
completely clash with one another. Most likely you will use a composite material for the decking material because of durability,
but you would not want that mateial for your railings. You will most likely want the materials of the different components of
your deck to match each other, and also to match the materials of your home.

Design ideas to choose from when picking your deck railings include stainless steel cable railings. This is an interesting
design in that it uses cables instead of balusters. The top rail is solid stainless. The advantage of this type of railing
is the added security, as well as the better visibility, since the cables do not create a sold block. Another idea that is different is glass balusters. This is another solution to gaining visibility, and they are also elegant looking. You mayalso consider ornamental metal, such as iron, to design your deck railing in. A metal such as this offers your deck beauty plus durability. You have to make sure to take care of metal railings, however, because they can rust if they are not finished and maintained properly.

A final feature that will add a unique touch to your deck railing design is to put some ornaments or features on it. You can
add flower boxes to bring nature right to your home. You may also consider centerpieces for the balusters. These add a
unique customized touch to your railing and they are available in a number of designs. Adding post caps and finials into the
post can further top off your railings for a beautiful look.

With all these different ideas for designing a deck railing, you may have too much of a choice in finding the perfect one.

Great Ways to Enjoy Pizza

I'm lucky enough to live in New York, where you don't have to walk for very long in a shopping area before you find a pizza restaurant. New York is a fabulous city, and many people say its pizzas are second to none.

Well, I'm not averse to this very popular dish myself and living here I've certainly had plenty of time and opportunities to taste different kinds of pizza. I'd like to let you know about some very interesting varieties I've come across.

If you appreciate creative cookery, I'm sure you'd like to try these suggestions. Made at home or ordered from a restaurant, I'm sure you'll agree they're a real treat.

I'd recommend the mac and cheese slice. It sounds a little strange but it really is delicious. It's even better if it's topped off with golden breadcrumbs. Any lover of pasta will truly enjoy the combination of mac and cheese atop a good slice of pizza.

Another top seller in New York's pizzerias is the spinach artichoke version. Just like a regular spinach pizza, it also has artichokes and creamy cheeses in the topping. I've heard people call it the best pizza ever.

If, like me, you're fond of buffalo chicken, you'll just love it on a hot pizza crust. When you bite into a buffalo chicken slice you'll think you're in heaven.

You can increase the flavor of your meal by adding blue cheese to the pizza or having a blue cheese dip on the side. Just the crust and dip are almost a meal in themselves, and I'm sure the calorie count can't be too encouraging. I try not to pay attention to that since I only treat myself on occasion.

I hope you are inspired to try at least one of these unconventional pizza recipes. I love all three and hope you'll be just as impressed as I am.

The Basics to Flying a Model Airplane

Model planes are full-flight capable, micro versions of real or fictional aircraft. They are often reduced-sized versions of traditional aircraft, made of lightweight materials such as fiberglass, balsa wood and polystyrene. Models rage from basic glider models, to accurate, and generally larger, scale models. Models capable of flight are powered by some kind of internal power-plant, used to drive the aircraft through the air similar to how an actual plane is powered. The most common propulsion systems are that of internally electronically powered models and those powered by a rubber band system.

Flying a model plane is not limited to flight enthusiasts, the process of building a model aircraft capable of flight is very rewarding and the actual flight itself is an extremely satisfying experience. While flying a model plane is a great deal of fun, it does require a degree of patience and seriousness. Electronically powered planes can be flown without experience, but much experience is required for the larger models.

A glider is generally the best way to begin your experience in flying a model plane. They are built solidly, inexpensive and easy to fly. However, if it powered flight you are after, then an electronic model is your best bet. Electronic flight is clean and also inexpensive as most electronic planes run off rechargeable batteries. There are however some issues with electronic fight that you would not find with a glider; you will need battery packs and often the duration of flight achievable from a single charge is not satisfying enough. For those serious about flying a model plane, you should look towards a powered model that uses fuel to propel the model through the air. The model does not need to be as light as an electronic model or glider and the fuel will let you fly for longer. You may however have to practice flight with a powered model in a field or somewhere away from populated areas if you want to legally practice flying a model plane of this nature.

Whatever you do, steer clear from fast scale flying models, while they fly fast and look impressive, these are the last qualities you want from a model plane if you are new to the recreation. The faster they fly, the less control you will have over them and the more expensive the guaranteed repairs will be. Remember to find an instructor or join a club, as often times reading the instruction manual may not suffice in terms of a lesion. Ask around, look for support and at least ask the guy at your local model flight shop for a recommendation of a first model. Flying a model plane is such a rewarding experience, especially if you plan on building your own, just ask around for the best deals and invest in a lesson or two to help you learn the basics.

Skydiving Equipment Resource, Using Powered Parachutes

Originally crude when invented in the early 80's, the powered parachute has become the ultimate personal flying machine. The powered parachute is also the most affordable powered aircraft available.

Man's desire to fly is as old as man himself. This desire has led us to the construction of planes, rockets, helicopters and so on. However for some people wishing to really explore the intimate side of flying these things fall short. Planes and helicopters simply lack the zest of souring above treetops and lakes like a bird on a wing. To fullfil this desire you need look no further than powered parachutes.

The powered parachute is a half parachute, half glider motorized flying wing. Originally crude when invented in the early 80's, the powered parachute has become the ultimate personal flying machine. The powered parachute is also the most affordable powered aircraft available. A new single seat version will cost you below $10,000. Not only being affordable, a powered parachute, when not in use, is small enough to fit in your garage.

What owner of a helicopter or plane can claim these things? Not only cheap to buy and maintain, a powered parachute is simple to operate. In the United States you don't even need an operator's license. An average person can learn the basics to flying these wonderful machines in an afternoon. Most people have their first solo flight after only 5 days of instructions. With a powered parachute there is no danger of spins and stalls so you can cruise along simply enjoying the views.

Using powered parachutes

The restrictions that do exist for powered parachutes are fairly common sense. Don't fly your powered parachute in strong winds or at night. Other than this the sky is basically yours. All these great features have made the powered parachute popular with many different people and for a variety of reasons. To begin with, they make an excellent aircraft for photographing. Many pictures of shining lakes and majestic mountains were
taken from powered parachutes. Their slow speed and 360 degree view make them perfect photography platforms. Their cheap initial and maintenance cost make them a popular selection among law enforcement and other government agencies. To operate a helicopter for a search and rescue operation is extremely expensive.

To operate a powered parachute is extremely cheap. When the space shuttle disintegrated upon re-entry the government called upon the powered parachute to search hundreds of miles for debris recovery. To have conducted this search with helicopters would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. All these reasons have made the powered parachute one of the best flying machines ever invented.

How to Burn 500 Calories Without Exercising

Does the title of this article get you really excited? You mean to tell me that you are going to tell me how to burn 500 calories without setting food in a gym? Yes, that is exactly what I am telling you. I am going to explain exactly how in this article, but before I do, you have to promise that you'll listen and try this technique. It may very well be the best piece of fitness advice you'll ever receive. Promise? Ok good.

To understand the strategy behind how to burn 500 calories without exercising, you must understand that some things burn more calories than others. Of course if you run on a treadmill for an hour, you're probably going to burn around 500 calories, give or take 100. Wow all of that running for a measly 500 calories? Ack! Seems like a lot of effort. And you know what is worse. Once you get off that thing, your calorie burn is all but FINISHED. There is little to no recovery from a treadmill and even less from a glider. Get ready for some top secret knowledge.

How to Burn 500 Calories While Reading
What if you could sit and read a book for a few hours while munching on a nice snack, and you would burn 500 calories? That would be nice wouldn't it? You can. And here's how. See your body adapts to changing conditions it undergoes on a daily basis. If you break down muscle tissue, it spends the next 48 hours repairing that muscle tissue, and restructuring it so that it can better withstand the breakdown next time. This not only builds stronger leaner muscle (which looks much better than fat), but it also burns A TON of calories in the process. And it does this while you are at rest.

So, if you spend about a 45 minutes in the gym lifting weights (just enough to break down your muscle fibers), then you are primed to be a fat burning furnace for the next 48 hours. But you have to make sure you are lifting weights or doing some sort of high resistance exercise that is breaking down your muscle tissue. You are wasting your time otherwise. If you don't believe me just take a look at the ratio of overweight people on the treadmill to the ratio of overweight people lifting weights next time you're at the gym.

NOTE: Give your muscles 48 hours to recover before heading back into the gym. The recovery phase is vital. You can also do these exercises at home if you don't have a gym membership.

It Doesn't End There
How to burn 500 calories without exercising doesn't end there. See, the more lean muscle you develop (again, much sexier than flab hanging off your bones), the higher your actual base metabolism will ultimately be. So when you are doing normal activities such as walking, writing, typing, shopping, whatever, you will be constantly burning more calories than you would if you didn't have this muscle. Muscle actually burns 3x the calories relative to fat.

Burn Calories While You Eat
Yes. You can actually burn calories while you take in calories. How? Well some structures are harder for the body to break down than others, particularly complex proteins. Due to this, the body expends more energy (burns more calories) breaking down protein than it does anything else. Focus on foods high in protein and you'll not only build more muscle, but you'll burn more calories in the process.

Kill Mold on Wood

Molds grow on wood very fast. Being organic product, wood and wooden products help molds obtain nutrition easily. People who have a fascination for wood products often complain that molds and mildews have grown on wood.

When molds grow on wood, they not only become health hazardous, but they damage the wood itself. The surface becomes stained and ugly.

Just imagine, molds have grown on your favorite wood furniture and now, along with mold removal, the pieces of furniture need facelift. The situation becomes real expensive when mildews and fungus attack wooden window shutters, doors, garden furniture, or, antiques.

Fact that makes the entire story more scary is that toxic black molds show greater tendency to grow on wood. Black mold on wood has become a common problem for many who live in humid tropical or subtropical region.

Initially you should try to prevent molds to attack wooden products of your home. If you fail, detect the location and reason behind the chaos and then kill mold on wood.

Prevent, Detect and Kill mold on wood:

These are the basic things you should do to avoid and get rid of mold problems. Let's learn about them one by one.

Prevent mold on wood

The first thing you should try is to prevent mold. Once they form on wood, they would definitely damage the property and your health. It's better to avoid them by keeping them at bay.

Molds always grow on wet wood products; moisturizer is the prime life factor for fungus. So always try to keep the wooden items dry. Use dehumidifier to keep the indoor places dry. If, somehow, wooden items get wet, make sure to dry it off quickly. Take special care of your wooden window shutters, pelmets, wooden garden chairs and tables during rainy season.

Identify the places that are humid by nature and that suffer from poor ventilation. Basement, kitchen and bathroom are very much prone to mold attack.

Sometimes waterproof coating is applied all over the surface of wood products to prevent them catching moisture. Varnish, paint or sun mica is often used as wood protractor.

Detect mold growth

They appear as spots on the surface of wooden goods. Watch closely and you would reveal velvety and discolored mold growth over the surface. However, from distance, they appear as mere spots.

Apart from the visible signals, molds are often accompanied by a musty odor. When molds grow on hidden places, the odor is the first thing people can sense. Once you are sanguine about mold infestation on wood, inspect surrounding areas and other wood products as well. Otherwise how can you decide where exactly you need to spray the mold cleaning products or dab organic mold removers!

Kill mold on wood:

Use organic mold removers or black mold killer to kill mildews and mold. Also ensure the conditions for molds to grow are removed. If the place is still humid and the wood is wet, chances are mold spores would land there and lead to mold growth again.

Do not forget to keep the surface clean and dust-free. When molds grow on wood, they do not eat the wood, but obtain nutrition from the organic particles present on the surface. So keep the wood surface clean and dry to keep it away from molds and mildews.

Things to Consider When Buying a Cheap Used Car

Getting a cheap used car can be a great experience, or can be a very horrible one. It all depends on whether or not you're willing to do the research beforehand to keep hunting out the best deal. Now we have the Internet, you can easily search online for great deals on cars. You can literally find all the good ones in your general area and go seek them out. Honestly though, he'll have the best luck by searching in the biggest city that's closest to you. You will find in the selection and the best deals. Once you do that, you need to contact the owner.

It's very important that you check up on the actual car itself before you buy. No matter what the owner says, no matter how trustworthy they seem, you need to check the facts. Online services like Carfax allow you to check the history of the car. It is good to get a trial account there just to check up on a few cars. Doing this will make a huge difference because you will have the peace of mind in knowing that the car wasn't in any huge accidents that really affect the body. Once you do this, you can really buy with confidence.

Now, how you pay for the car is a different story. If you have the cash to pay up front, this is the best option. If not, you need to go get a loan from somewhere, whether it's a bank or credit union of some sort. They will write you a check that you can give to the owner. When you take this check to the owner, you'll pay them with it. Then they will be out of transaction. Then, you'll have a payment plan with the bank or the credit union to pay off the remaining cost of the car. It really is that simple to do.

The Power of Our Dream

Many of us have dreams when we were young, some even have big dream like Anousheh Ansari who wish to fly out and float in the the wonderful boundless space. But how many of us really have our dream come true?

I find that dream is important, as it is a projection of what we want to achieve in life. It has the power to drive us to achieve our goals and give us the strength to overcome any obstacles. However not many people realize the Power of Dream!

I would like to share with you how powerful dreams can be with the stories below.

In the eighteen century, the Wright brothers' (Wilbur and Orville) dream was to fly, and they have turn mankind dreams of flying into reality. In 1899 they start to experiment with gliders. However, the flying machine was flown successfully in December 1903 and a patent were granted for the flying machine in 1906. Their perseverance, courage, team work and application of scientific process give these self-taught engineers' dream come true. Most important, What they have achieved changed our world forever.

If you want to achieve what you want in life, well defined your dream and turn it into measurable goals, break them down into specific action steps and visualize the desired outcomes, just like the Wright brothers did.

In this current century a woman who is a billionaire, by the name of Anousheh Ansari set her dreams when she was only eight. She took courage and stands up for her dream and finally arrive at her destination.

When Anousheh Ansari was young, she liked to fix her eyes on the twinkling stars of the night skies over Tehran during summer. She look deep into the darkness of the mysterious universe and wondering what is out there? And she wonder if she could fly and float in the wonderful, boundless freedom of space?

Anousheh Ansari, who was born in Iran and lived there until age 16, had migrated to U.S with her whole family and got an education in Electrical Engineering. She has not forgotten her dream. She stuck to her dream and did not lose her way. Finally in 18th September 2006 she was raised to the surface of the moon and started her space traveling and became the First Female Private Space Tourist after spending about 20 millions.

To me it is a huge sum of money spends to fulfill her dream. Someone once asked her: is it worth spending so much money??

Her reply was she really do not have the right answer on how to price a dream. she said it is different for every person, But as for her she was ready to give her life for her dream, She would even go to that extend if she knew with certainty that it would be a one-way ticket.

I wonder how you would put a price for your dream and would you take such a risk even knowing all the dangers that you may encounter. To be honest with you, neither do I have an answer for it. But I do believe every person is different.

Many people tend to forget their dreams when they encounter life challenges. They put aside their aspirations, forget that they can and have the power to shape their future and ultimately they lose hope and their confidence.

Always remember that people just like you and me is no different from Ansari or the Wright brother, we all have the power to change anything lies sleeping within us.

He was outfitted with National Geographic Society's CRITTERCAM this summer by a collaborative team of researchers including ten high school students from Hartford. Snippy wore the camera for about two hours as he went for an underwater walk in the Snip. In that time he covered about a kilometer or twelve football fields. So on average, Snippy did the 100 yard dash in about ten minutes. In reality, he moved much faster than this, but he stopped to breathe 36 times-- which averages to one breath every 3.5 minutes. Snippy also paused to investigate some of the interesting creatures of the lake. He traveled through many freshwater mussel beds, and ran into several schools of large sunfish ...

Rock Climbing Wall Kits

When you were a child, your jungle gym probably had swings, a slide, and maybe a glider. That was all you could hope for back in the day. All that has changed now. Jungle gyms have everything from swings to forts to rock climbing walls. That's right, rock climbing walls. You can buy a rock climbing wall kit with your children's play set, or get one to add on later when the kids are older.

With a rock climbing wall kit added to your child's play area, your active kids will have fun on a rock climbing wall that presents them with more of a challenge than simply climbing up and down ladders. All the kids in the neighborhood will want to play at your house when you add a rock climbing wall kit to the children's jungle gym.

You can choose your rock climbing wall kit in stained pine, redwood, or any other type of material of your choice. They come with full instructions so you can start to erect your jungle gym and rock climbing wall kit as soon as you are ready.

A rock climbing wall kit for Frontier, Discovery or Eclipse play set is the perfect add on to your existing jungle gym. The rock climbing wall kit comes with ten rock wall holds and the mounting hardware, it is available in two different colors, it has the wall and the supporting hardware, an extra bag of five rocks with hardware and a detailed 3D illustrated instruction manual to help you set up your kids rock-climbing wall in no time at all.

You can ask your friends at the rock climbing gym what the best rock climbing wall kit is, but they may not know. Your best bet is to do research online before you purchase anything.

With a rock climbing wall kit, you can also construct an indoor rock-climbing wall to enjoy year round, no matter what the weather conditions are. An indoor rock climbing wall kit is a great way to build strength and endurance and the confidence you need to be a successful rock climber.

Science - The Space Shuttle Design Concept - Idealized Functionality!

Stripped to the essentials, NASA's Space Transportation System (STS), the Space Shuttle, needed an Orbiter vehicle to accommodate crew and mission requirements, plus the propulsive power to accelerate many millions of pounds of personnel, hardware and fuel to orbiting velocity; plus all back-up, contingency and emergency equipment that could conceivably be necessary for foreseeable and unforeseeable exigencies. Among the forcing-functional-considerations (after the primary concern for safety and reliability) was cost and the minimization of factors which would necessitate long preparation periods between flights (the "shuttle" concept).

The Orbiter vehicle would house the astronauts as they circled Earth, containing also all requisite systems, materials, supplies and equipment for: life support during the voyage; communication with Earth; mission objectives (space experiments to be carried out); and requirements for the return to Earth: mechanisms for de-celeration from orbital speed, critical insulation or heat protection for the reentry phase, and means for flight control and landing upon a standard length runway (glider modus operandi, no propulsive power), and conventional control surfaces: wing flaps, rudder flaps, wheels and brakes.

The propulsive system evolved into a three engine configuration (providing increased reliability and stability), integrated into the Orbiter vehicle structure; engine fuel contained in a large central tank attached to the Orbiter (droppable when empty, with altitude-opening parachutes) and two strap-on solid rocket boosters (reliable gigantic "fire-crackers), droppable and recoverable from the ocean (similar parachutes). The propulsion system requirement was extremely demanding, to achieve lift-off and acceleration to reach orbit velocity, lifting over seven million pounds of total weight.

The most reliable and efficient configuration for assembly of the elements and for optimum launch sequence was quickly determined to be the two giant solid rockets bolted to the launch pad (huge explosive bolts anchoring the rocket flanges to the concrete pad); the Orbiter vehicle attached (removably) to the rockets; finally the gigantic fuel tank (removably) attached to the Orbiter. The launch sequence was initiated by firing of the on-board engines, then the firings of the solid rockets and their flange bolts exploded - separating the STS assembly from Earth. The Space Shuttle system would then rise, slowly at first and vertically, increasing in speed and altitude until clear of the Cape Canaveral launch facility, then adjusting to an angled horizontal climb; taking advantage of the direction of Earth's rotation (reducing the STS requirement to reach orbit speed) by about 1000 miles per hour. As the solid rocket boosters complete their firing, they are dropped, to be salvaged from the ocean for reuse. The orbiter engines continue to power the system until orbit is reached and the fuel tank is depleted, when it also is blasted free of the orbiter.

What is generally not known is that once the Shuttle drops its fuel tank, the orbiting vehicle no longer has propulsive capability - coasting along at 18,000 miles per hour in the vacuum of space. The mechanisms aboard the vehicle for maneuvering are the Space Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS), a system of rocket engines used for final orbit injection, modification or maneuvering at the Space Station. The OMS consists of two protrusions at the back of the Shuttle, on either side of the vertical stabilizer. Each contains a hypergolic engine with 6,000 lb thrust and a specific impulse of 313 seconds. The OMS pods also contain the rear set of small reaction control system engines.

For the initial ventures into space, the Mercury and Apollo programs, the reentry approach was for "over-kill" - to protect the astronauts from the extreme heat of reentry by covering the bottom of the circular capsule (the face to reentry) with many inches of ablatable material, fiber-glass and resin, which melts and vaporizes, the transformation from a solid to a gas dissipating the enormous heat of reentry, protecting the astronauts. As the slowing capsule falls to a low altitude, a trio of parachutes is deployed - the capsule drops into the ocean, with a quick pick-up by naval vessels on close standby.

For the concept of a Space Shuttle however, the opposite approach was essential, the need for the ultimate in advanced technology (despite the jaw-dropping cost), but achieving thermal protection of human astronauts by pure insulation - the floor of the Orbiter, conventional aluminum sandwich aircraft structural paneling, the cabin at normal room temperature - while only several inches below, the reentry temperatures would reach 3000 degrees Fahrenheit - upon the specially-developed Space Shuttle Thermal Protective System (TPS) or tiles, the most efficient insulator devised by technology (glued to the aluminum structure) - the tiles, six by six inches and less than two inches thick - covering the flattish bottom of the Orbiter's fuselage and wing; 30,000 of them (in all Space Shuttle pictures, what is seen as "black": the fuselage nose and leading edges of wing and tail, and the entire flat bottom) at $10,000 apiece (the double vacuuming and processing cost in the 1980 time period for the first Shuttle; newspaper accounts after the Columbia disaster in 2003, through volume cost reduction for the Shuttle fleet, stated the price then to be $2300 apiece.)
